May 25, 2015 – Smooth Jazz In The Mix Volume 7 JazzRadio In The Mix, is a part of the Smooth Jazz Mix series. We have a little something for everyone! We have smooth jazz tracks, uptempo funky jazz, we have a classic jam, and remakes of a couple of classics.
We start it off with some smooth jazz by Brian Simpson, Dave Koz and Jackiem Joyner. In between, we have a remake of a Luther Vandross classic, “My Sensitivity (Gets In The Way)” by Ledisi. Everything is better with a Luther song in the mix! Speaking of remakes, Kirk Whalum puts his spin on a Stevie Wonder classic, “All I Do,” with vocals provided by Wendy Moten. Normally you don’t remake Stevie Wonder, but a jazz version with a female vocalist definitely hits the spot.
Next we start to funk it up a bit courtesy of Paul Taylor and David Wells/Chris Geith Project. These are perfect tracks to transition from the smooth beginning of the mix to the more uptempo grooves we will hear next. Nathan East hits you hard with “Daft Funk.” In case you didn’t know, Nathan played on the iconic Daft Punk album, Random Access Memories. Daft Punk then returned the favor and appeared on the Nathan East Project. Who knew smooth jazz could be so funky?! Speaking of funky, “Boogie Down” is up next. One of my favorite Al Jarreau tracks. Every now and then I will sneak this in to my mix when I am out playing smooth jazz, and I must say that you get looks from the crowd, like, OMG I have not heard this in years! The party officially begins at that point. Jeff Golub and Steve Oliver continue the funky grooves in the middle of the set.
As we close it out, we have the ladies blowing the horns, courtesy of Candy Dulfer and Cindy Bradley. “Massive Transit” is one of my favorites! There is something about that groove that gets me going. You cannot explore funk without mentioning Down to The Bone. You can take any album and your head will bob the entire time. To finish out the mix, we have Maysa, one of my favorite female vocalists. In case you forgot, she sings with Incognito, another of my favorite bands.
