Is there really a more talented piano player than Keiko Matsui? There are an abundance of candidates, but if you really listen to her play, you definitely have to put her right there at the top.
Her latest album, Echo is a case in point. This is her 28th album release, and the term “Like a fine wine, it just gets better with time,” definitely fits here. The album features ten original tracks, and there are some top flight musicians on EVERY song. Just look at some of the names: Kirk Whalum, Paul Jackson Jr., Marcus Miller, vocalist Gretchen Parlato, and the legendary percussionist, Luis Conte.
There are no filers here. You can listen to the entire album – front to back – and it will be time well spent.
Two of the tracks that we especially like are Moon Over Gotham, and the title track, Echo. Just be aware of the cohesiveness of the musicians as you experience the sounds.
Shoot, I lied! Esprit is another track that you will add to your playlist.
Matsui will also play several shows at the blue note in beautiful Napa in April, and also Blue Note Hawaii in September.
