Hampton Roads Soul Music Festival 2016

All eyes will be on Hampton, Virginia as the Hampton Roads Soul Music Festival 2016 will take place at the Hampton Coliseum on October 29th, 2016.  This will be a full night of Old School and Smooth R&B.

Here is the lineup for the Hampton Roads Soul Music Festival 2016:

Frankie Beverly & Maze

The headliner is one of THE iconic bands of all time.  Although the band started in Philadelphia in 1970, they really did not get started until they moved to San Francisco in 1971.  They started out touring with Marvin Gaye, and the ball really got rolling after that.

Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly came out in 1976, and that album included the hits Happy Feelin’s and Lady of Magic.

Live in New Orleans was released in 1980.  Running Away, and perhaps their most famous song, Before I Let Go, were the top hits on that album.  Their next album was called Can’t Stop The Love in 1985.  You know the hits, Back In Stride and Too Many Games.  By the way, a tribute album for Frankie Beverly & Maze was released in 2011, and one of the highlights is the cover of Back In Stride by Mint Condition.  Check the link to hear the track.

Silky Soul was released in 1989, and that album featured the Marvin Gaye inspired hit, Silky Soul, and the classic track, Can’t Get Over You.  Let us not forget some of their other hits, which includes Joy & Pain, We Are One and The Morning After.

Joe

We featured a post on Joe a few weeks ago, but I do want to add that Joe was also on that Frankie Beverly tribute album, where he remade one of my favorite songs, Can’t Get Over You.

Jon B

When I first heard his first hit, Someone to Love, a duet with Babyface, I honestly could not tell who was singing.  They both sounded so much alike.  That song was the perfect introduction for this R&B crooner.  When I say introduction, I mean as a singer.  He had previously written songs for Michael Jackson, After 7, and Toni Braxton.  Jon has released a total of seven albums, and some of his other hits include Don’t Say, Pretty Girl, and Are U Still Down?  Jon is still on the touring circuit, and he is a great edition to this lineup.

Ginuwine

We all know his most popular hit, Pony.  A couple of my favorites from the singer include, Same Ol G and the ensemble song from P DiddyI Need A Girl Part II which also features Loon and Mario Winans.

Ginuwine won the Soul Train Music Award in 2000 for Best R&B/Soul Male Album – 100% Ginuwine.

SWV

These ladies were at the forefront of the New Jack Swing Movement.  They had a good eight year run, from 1990 to 1998.  Some of their hits included Weak, I’m So Into You, Right Here (the Human Nature Remix) and You’re The One.  They also contributed to a few movie soundtracks, including Above The Rim and Waiting To Exhale.  Rain, which is off the Release Some Tension album, was remade by smooth jazz all-star Norman Brown.

This should be a great show, and you can get your tickets here.
