Hall of Fame Jazz Composer Maceo Pinkard

We received a note from Lster Rutsky the other day, and he let us know that June 27th is the anniversary of Hall of Fame Jazz Composer Maceo Pinkard’s brith.

Pinkard learned to play every instrument, but he is best known for composing “Sweet Georgia Brown,” a song that the Harlem Globetrotters adopted as their theme music.  Sugar, was also a big hit, as Peggy Lee recorded it in 1955.  Them There Eyes was another hit for Pinkard, as Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday as well as the bands of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman had success with the song.

In 1917, Pinkard formed his own publishing company, and began selling his compositions to major national publishing companies.

He was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 1984.

Thanks, Lster for keeping his name alive!
