If you like your Instrumental Jazz Swingin’ with a dash of funk, then you will want to take note of Frank Sutton. The Dallas native has been making a name for himself of late, and his latest offering, Rain the Experience is out right now.
Sutton did not record the album alone. His band is called The Frank Sutton Experience, and it includes Saxophonist Claud Parker, Bassist Robert Bridges, Percussionist Gerald Jones, and Drummer Dennis Ford.
As you listen to the tracks, it is clear that the band is not merely window dressing. They are a cohesive unit, where each musician gets the opportunity to do their thing.
There is a nice mix here, from the funky groove of Rain Man, the smoothed out R&B flavored Rain Serenade, to the feel-good vibe of Brighter Days Ahead. For me, one of the best piano tracks I have heard so far in 2019 is The Refreshing.

You like those jazzy remakes? Sutton obliges with two familiar grooves. The Stevie Wonder classic Higher Ground and the Bill Withers anthem It’s Gonna Be A Lovely Day are covered, and the band makes it clear that they really know how to put their spin on classic tracks.
