Byron Miller ‘Reach For It’ – LISTEN

 April 8, 2025

By  ExoticDJ

Funk upon a time circa `77, a headstrong youngblood bassist from Detroit had made his way to L.A. by way of New York City – after already working with vibes master Roy Ayers and guitar superhero Carlos Santana - to join the band of the keyboard ‘Wizard of Ooo,’ George Duke. Following a few albums of cerebral Jazz-World Fusion, Duke decided he’d like to funk-a-while. Lifting a chant his band had been jamming on at the end of his shows, Duke, Byron, drummer Ndugu, guitarist Icarus and a trio of femmes took it to the studio, splashed it with some Pouilly-Fuissé and created the Deep Funk Anthem, “Reach For It.” Beyond its overall party-starting instigation, the jam featured an extended bass solo by Byron that turned the heads of everyone from Larry Graham and Louis Johnson to Bootsy Collins himself – thus solidifying the signature sound graduation of a then-youngin’ known as…‘Funky Boy!’

Fast forward 48 years and senior funkateer Byron “PsychoBass” Miller has revisited his career-defining jam with a fresh version of “Reach For It” just in time for Spring-Summer 2025. Chilled to sonic perfection by Miller with his partner in funky crime, Chris “Big Dog” Davis, plus very special guest Gerald Albright on alto sax, the new “Reach For It” swings on a lower key frequency that is the all-you-need soundtrack for preppin’ to go the party, rollin’ with the top down to the party, and gettin’ your full-on 360-degree groove on at the party!

“Reach For It” is the latest and greatest new single from Byron’s forthcoming hits-packed fourth project, PsychoBass 4: Motor City Love. Previous radio hits leading up to this one include “Stride,” “Jam On Ten Mile,” “Say It Ain’t Good to Ya” and “To the Floor” (oh, Lawd). And, trust, there is plenty more where they come from as Byron prepares for his first long-awaited extended U.S. tour.

A serious bonus for electric bass heads and all folks Funk Fanatical is that “B” is rockin’ not one but TWO of his signature basses. He’s playing his original Fender bass from the `77 session, plus he’s also throwin’ down with his very own MTD6 string bass as well. That’s double The Funk for the mathematically challenged. Not only does Byron not play when it comes to his funk, he most certainly does “PLAY” his funk - every day, 24/7/365.
