[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Brian Owens soul of cashThere are times when you have to give a nod to the Old School. For me, this does two things:

  1. Exposes the music to a new audience
  2. Allows the artist to show their versatility

Brian Owens does both of these things with Soul Of Cash. The album features one original tune, and seven tracks that were originally recorded by the legendary Johnny Cash. These are reimagined for 2017. Now, you are probably thinking, “Johnny Cash? Who in the heck is that?”

He was mainly performing in the Country music space, but his music offers influences of Blues, Rock, Folk and Gospel.

By the way, Cash had his own television show, The Johnny Cash Show, and he also appeared on film, and several other television shows.

Now you know.

Owens puts a nice, soulful spin on some classic tracks.

There have been a few songs that were released ahead of the album. The first track on the album, Ring Of Fire is one of them.

Check out the “Unplugged version”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/5Q02M7PN7kI” el_width=”50″ align=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Folsom Prison Blues is up next, and with the state of our country in 2017, it is a timely song. There is a message in the music for those who listen.

Walk The Line was one of Johnny Cash’s biggest hits.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/LJ-Vke2Hc9c” el_width=”50″ align=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We break down the blues with Cry Cry Cry. I always say that the Blues is better when that bassline is front and center. It just gives the song substance. Even though this track was recorded in 2017, it keeps that old style flavor.

Sunday Morning Coming Down is up next, and this is/was a very popular track. It has been remade no less than eight times, by artists such as Willie Nelson, and Jerry Lee Lewis. We can add this soul version as one of the best.

Take a listen to the next track, Long Black Veil, with some commentary by Owens.

Cash always dressed in black, by the way. This version has a Motown feel to it. I can imagine the Miracles or the Temptations recording this. Owens definitely channels the greats on this one.

The albums concludes with Soul In My Country. This is one of those Blues tracks that I need to hear live.

As 2017 comes to a close, we are happy that several artists are releasing albums that allow us to open our minds and explore music that we might not ordinarily listen to.

Soul Of Cash is one of those albums.
